For my CNNC design I tried to create a space that went from public to private. The classrooms and community areas are towards the front of the building and the office space and employee areas in the back. I used dropped ceiling panels to help you navigate through the space. My concept was lighting your path to a new life.

Cultural Mat-- Mozambique

I know i already put up pictures of my mat, but I didn't like the quality of my photo. So I retook the photo and i'm not entirely happy with these so I make retake them again.

Mat Project- Mozambique

For our first studio project we were given the task of creating a mat that would make someone from our assigned country feel welcome. I had Mozambique and after reading about the people there I thought I should create a mat out of rafia. But when I looked at pictures of this place i realized that it had beautiful beaches and I was influenced by the blues and greens of the water. The form in the middle is somewhat like a fish because fishing is a major industry there.

Family details: Karim’s mother, father, uncle, brother and sister are all in the United States. His other sister and the rest of his family still reside in Egypt.

Occupation: Karim currently works at Starbucks and he is also attending Wake Technical Community College.

Path to Coming Here: Karim’s father and uncle came to the United States in 1977 for college. His father moved the family to the United States in 2000.

Goals/Intentions/Dreams: Karim’s current dreams are to own his own Hookah bar. If he doesn’t do that he wants to be a wholesaler.

Life before and after: Life in the United States as far as living conditions go is much better for Karim. When asked specifically what is better he answered “Everything.” He also told us that Egyptians who were educated in the United States got more respect and better jobs than people educated in Egypt. Karim said that he misses the strong sense of community that he had in Egypt. He also said that Egypt is more fun than the United States is and there was more stuff to do in Egypt.

Challenges: The challenges of living in the United States are the people, individual community, and Language.

Acculturation: Karim says that he has taken the things he likes about each culture and put them together. At home his family still keeps their traditions, but Karim also enjoys activities that other Americans would.

Our first assignment in Iar-212 was to create a composition using photoshop that was inspired by nature. I used the Hagia Sophia as my building because its just such an interesting and beautiful building. I am actually pretty happy with the way this turned out and I feel like I learned a few new things in the process.

We tend to use computers frequently in design today. There are many pro’s to

designing on the computer. For instance you can fairly accurately depict how a space is

going to look once it is built on sketch up. This gives your client a good idea of what to

expect in their new space. You can also draft plans that are more accurate than they

would be if you drew them by hand, although a good knowledge of hand drafting is

required in order to do these plans. Designing on computers also helps to keep the paper

trail from becoming excessive.

In the future it is possible that we could use computers more extensively in our

design work. Perhaps we will use them in the future to construct more stable buildings or

buildings that are much more complex. I really believe that through computers, we will

be able to push design to its limits creating structures that we would have never thought

possible before computers.

Edward Lowenstein was a very

influential architect in

Greensboro during his time.

His work included residential

as well as commercial

buildings. He had a hand in the

very progressive work of the

young women in the interior
The space that has been created really shapes ones experience within the space. It is as if one is being guided through the space.
design program at Women’s College and in

equal opportunities for African Americans.

Lowenstein was a very progressive thinker

especially for his generation, and the exhibit

which pays homage to him shows a progression through time.

The exhibit is very successful because it uses the elements of modern building

such as wood and metal to create a very geometric space which you experience while you

read the materials. The wooden beams are especially interesting because of the different

finishes or lack of a finish that are applied to the wood. The creators of the exhibit also

used a green wood which Lowenstein used in his various projects, this was a nice way to

tie in his work even in the structure. The use of natural light in the exhibit is very

important and the artificial light in the structure serves to light the information. The

effect the lighting creates is a soothing one and it allows the viewer to slow down and

take in the information on Lowenstein. The exhibit does not go all the way to the ceiling
so it is like they have created a space within a space. Another interesting element to this

environment is that it uses one of Lowenstein’s trademark angles in the roof planes of the
exhibit structure. The way that the exhibit structure is done is very nice because it ties

into Lowenstein’s work as a designer and it makes for a much closer experience with this

mans work. So there is a strong relationship between the artifact that is being displayed

and the environment it is being displayed in.

The images and information in the exhibit didn’t seem to be organized in a

particular fashion. In fact it seemed that you could wander through the exhibit however

you pleased. On one end of the exhibit it shows Lowenstein’s work with the Women’s

College and as you move through the space you see the various residential as well as

commercial spaces that he created. The exhibit includes a timeline of his work and

significant events in his life. All the information is very insightful but it is a lot to

process.
This part of the exhibit is a representation of the angles which Lowenstein often used in his work. The ways in which the information is

presented to the viewer varies within the exhibit. While most of the information is

displayed through text and pictures there is also the use of sketch up to create three

dimensional models of the homes. I feel like these are more successful than the floor

plans and text because people do not experience space in the view of a floor plan. People

experience space vertically and therefore sections, elevations and three dimensional

models help to show the space in its true form.

Lowenstein was a very influential member of the Greensboro community. He

brought modernism to a small, southern town and he did his best to be a progressive

thinker who accepted women and African-Americans. In this exhibit you physically

experience the things that were important to him in design. It is an extremely successful

way paying homage to this mans work.

This image exhibits the many ways in which the artifacts were displayed with the computer in the corner. The metals and wood were just so beautiful and really created a space within a space.

Intent Narrative and Program

Intent
I want to create spaces that are comfortable, functional and stylish. I want to take our selected color schemes and create a space that is soothing and feels like a space you would want to raise a child in. The goal in the common areas is to give one the feeling of wide open spaces with areas where the mothers can come together and bond with each other. In the private spaces the ceilings are lowered so that there is a feeling of safety and security. The private spaces would be the place where the mother and child bond with each other so it is important that all the needs of each being are met. I want the space to be modern in style but incorporate elements to make it feel like a house.

Our original intent for this project was to create a modern home for young mothers to safely raise their children. We have used the 90's decade to influence our work through looking at the work of its designers and artists. We have used this knowledge to develop floor plans and the exterior to our buildings. Our group still has much more work to do on this project but we have developed an idea of where we would like to go.

Currently in 2nd year Iarc we are doing a project in which we are researching and designing hypothetical possibilities for next years urban studio. Our most recent assignment is to build a machine that will help us to see what kind of light the site has. So we took pictures of our machine in 5 different locations on the site at three different times of the day. Its been cloudy for the past two days so my findings really didn't differ that much from time to time. These are the morning results. As you can see there aren't really any shadows.
